"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" Nelson Mandela
How does the Scholarship work? The only criterion to qualify for a scholarship is extreme poverty. Although education is free in Thailand, there are expenses for the required uniforms and textbooks. In many cases children from far away villages, where there is no school, must pay for rent in a boarding house. Most of the students receiving scholarships are in the primary years of their education and need between 2,500.- and 7,500.- Baht (60.- and 200.- US dollars) for one school year. The amount depends on the needs of each individual student. The scholarship money is distributed through adult volunteers who know the students well. They but what is needed and personally pay the bills. The money is never handed over to the family. At present there are ten people responsible for handling the money - two priests, two sisters, two teachers, one social worker and three village volunteers. There are no administration costs and all donated money goes to pay the needed educational costs. The progress of each student is monitored.
